About medication abortion

About medication abortion ("the abortion pill" or "medical abortion"):

It would be nice if we could take a pill and "magically" not be pregnant, but unfortunately that is not the case. The abortion pill Mifeprex starts the process of a miscarriage, and a second medication called misoprostol causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy, within 24-48 hours. Both surgical and medication abortion have advantages and disadvantages and you need to figure out which method will work best for your situation. We strongly suggest that you go to www.pregnancyoptions.info and read the section, Abortion: Which Method is Right for Me? for a fair, unbiased look at both methods. We also have a paper version in our office.

We are available to discuss the pros and cons of each method. If you choose the abortion pill you must be 8 weeks or less from the first day of your last period (confirmed by ultrasound here) and be able to return to our office for a follow-up. Dr. Cousins requires that you return to our office for your two week check-up to be sure that the abortion is complete. Although this may be less convenient for you, we must work together to make sure the abortion was successful and you are OK. Please let us know if you see any problems returning to our office. Additionally, we require parental involvement for minors seeking the abortion pill. The fee for the medication abortion is the same as the surgical procedure. If you needed a surgical intervention or extra visits at our office, there is no additional charge. Please call to discuss any questions you may have about either method.
